The City of Phoenix has a significant portfolio of water resources to meet the demands of its growing population. The City's three main water sources include: the Salt and Verde River Watershed; the Central Arizona Project (CAP); and, groundwater. Supply availability from these sources varies from year to year due to fluctuations in precipitation, limited reservoir capacity, unresolved water right claims, water conveyance system reliability, and reductions in groundwater production capacity due to contaminants or aging wells. The Salt River Project (SRP) and CAP sources provide raw water to the City's five WTPs: Verde; Val Vista; Squaw Peak; Deer Valley; and, Union Hills. Except for the Union Hills WTP, all plants are supplied by the SRP canal system. Union Hills WTP receives raw water from the CAP canal. The following sections present a summary of the raw water quality for these facilities and briefly discuss background related to the canal systems that deliver these waters to the Phoenix metropolitan area. Data for the Verde WTP are not presented here, as this plant is not intended to provide potable water for the City after 2005. Includes tables, figure.
