This study investigates the biodegradation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX) using a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) with granular activated carbon (GAC) as a biological attachment medium. Batch experiments were run to analyze the MTBE and tert-butyl-alcohol (TBA) degradation kinetics of the culture attached to the carbon. Biological analysis was completed to provide insights about the components of the culture and to compare with similar systems. Includes 34 references, figures.
