The conventional geothermal system is used for heating and cooling. Ground
temperatures are between 50 and 60%. These are closed loop or pump and dump
arrangements. This paper discusses using potable water from
water mains as a source of heat and cooling. This system uses the heat exchanger, the
heat pump, and the air delivery system. Heat exchangers use 3 degrees of
temperature to achieve cooling or heating. The location of the heat exchanger can be
either on the main or in the building. The system on the main, a wrapped flat copper
coil around a stainless steel spool about 132 inches long, can be controlled by the
water utility. The heat exchanger in the building returns potable water after a heat
exchange into the water mains. The potable water can be protected to prevent
contamination from a heat exchanger.
