Palm Beach County has successfully obtained the first long-term 20-year duration
water use permit from the South Florida Water Management District that takes into
consideration the need for commitment of water supply for Everglades restoration. The 20-year
water use permit requires the implementation of an integrated water resource program involving
significant usage of alternative water supplies. This long duration permit will reduce costs by
eliminating the application process need for shorter-term Water Use Permits and providing
reduced bond financing rates. In addition, it provides assurances to county government, the
environmental community, and regulatory agencies that water supply and land use planning are
appropriately linked. Includes figures.
