In response
to the opportunity for increased public awareness and education to help the Tampa Bay region deal with the
effects of a three year drought and increased demands on water supplies, the
Hillsborough County Water Department implemented a program known as
the Senior Water Resource Training program (SWRT). The overall goal of the Hillsborough County SWRT program was to recruit, train, and sustain a group of senior citizens to be water resource educators for
their communities, thereby using an experienced and influential segment of society to engage
with their peers and the public about important water resource issues. The first offering of
SWRT in Hillsborough County consisted of eight half-day sessions offered over four consecutive
weeks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. An
important partner in the program was a local retirement complex, which offered meeting space as
well as transportation for the field trips, which were open to all residents of the complex. The paper discusses weekly assignments, guest speakers, field trips, a program evaluation, focus group research, and sample questions from an attitude survey. Includes table.
