The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH), Environmental Health Section
participates in a unique collaboration with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission
(SFPUC) Water Quality Bureau to ensure a safe drinking water supply for the 2.4 million
people in the Bay Area served by SFPUC water. This collaboration is an example of public
health specialists, water quality engineers, and public utility personnel working together to
provide safe drinking water. This collaboration involves maintaining current high quality
water supplies by addressing drinking water issues from the public health perspective.
Collaborative activities include the following: research projects, public health education
about water quality issues, regulatory support, emergency preparedness assistance and water
borne disease surveillance, and cross connection control.
