The study objectives of this slide presentation were to:
identify organic compounds from
households and household commodities
potentially present in municipal
wastewater based on
production volumes,
environmental relevance, and
feasibility of analytical quantification; and, evaluate the occurrence and fate of
selected target compounds by
screening for target compounds in full-scale
municipal wastewater facilities,
evaluating removal efficiency of compounds
through individual conventional unit operations, and assess advanced wastewater treatment
processes through bench- and pilot-scale
testing. Methodology included:
Target Compound Selection;
National Institutes of Health National Library
of Medicine, most comprehensive database
identified covering household commodities; and, 720 chemicals identified falling within eight
commodities. Conclusions indicate that:
a majority of compounds are present in all wastewater
influents;
presence of compounds confirm study approach;
occurrence likely due to combination of production
volumes, usage patterns, and physical/chemical
properties;
all target compound concentrations significantly
reduced;
HPV chemicals contribute to the organic load of
WWTPs; and,
little is known regarding additive or synergistic
effects of HPV chemicals on the environment. Includes tables, figures.
