This slide presentation outlines a case study for the Village of Manteno, Illinois on using ultraviolet (UV) disinfection for groundwater supplies. Initial outcomes included: groundwater under the direct influence of surface water, enhanced treatment by increasing chlorine residual and contact time (CT), several drawbacks; needed a different solution to get all wells online without another boil order. The solution involved: add UV disinfection ahead of chlorination; most economical option, quick installation; and, goals were to provide second barrier to pathogens, minimize required chlorine contact time, and eliminate aesthetic issues.
