This paper presents a methodology to optimize water quality in water distribution systems
using Global Optimization Methods. Traditionally, water distribution networks have been
optimized from the build-up cost perspectives. While attention has been focused on
leakage reduction, using operational approaches such as throttling control valves,
the water quality has generally been ignored.
This study focuses on reducing water age in a distribution system through the
optimal location as well as settings of valves, so that the distribution system can be
optimized for both water quality as well as pressure (and hence leakage). Includes 28 references, table, figures.
