This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of Kentucky's Area-Wide Optimization Model (AWOM) that had the following objectives: to focus on optimizing surface water treatment plants for
microbial/particulate removal; was
triggered by Cryptosporidium events in Milwaukee, Georgia, and Las Vegas;
to emphasize moving beyond regulatory compliance
requirements; and, to
increase particulate removal and enhance public health
protection. Four components of the AWOM are presented and include: Status Component;
Evaluation Component;
Follow up Component; and,
Maintenance Component. Operators using the Optimization
Assessment Software - "Telling the
Story" is presented, along with Evaluation and Follow-up Tools, and Life Beyond Microbial Optimization -
DBP and Distribution System. Presentation summary includes the following points:
the Kentucky AWOP has shown proven benefits at both the state
and water system level in terms of improved water quality;
the water systems recognize the benefits of the program in
terms of operation/maintenance/management; and,
