This poster paper presents a water main replacement project that included the following: existing 16-Ø/12-Ø steel water
main attached to Springfield Avenue,
Springfield, Union County, New Jersey;
steel water main and pipe
supports in need of replacement; New Jersey Department of Transportation
(NJDOT) Interstate Route 78
Local/Express to be partially closed
in phases (opportunity to do
replacement work); maintaining water supply and
schedule critical during work;
investigated alternatives for
water main materials; and,
construction in three
phases. Project complication involved the following: leaking valve (Phase III test but not I/II);
space for work (2 contractors);
dissimilar metals (galvanic action)
between jacket and pipe supports (jacket
should corrode first, easier to replace);
regularly changing schedule (highway
contractor has incentive to finish early);
existing support rod Ø changed each
phase; and,
pipe support spacing. Presentation summary includes the following: water main replaced on a changing
schedule with ductile iron pipe and
steel pipe;
