The construction of new treatment plants or expansion of existing ones often involves
installation of new pipelines, and open trenching is often one of the methods for most of
the new installation. This paper presents an alternative to open trenching as a means for
pipeline installation - microtunneling. Various aspects of microtunneling design and
construction challenges are presented, including subsurface conditions, machine
selection, ranges of applicability (pipe size and length), and construction limitation. Includes 3 references, tables.
