This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, and the Middleton Water Supply System's problem with low-level contamination by Trichloroethylene (TCE). Treatment alternatives are presented, and Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) using ultraviolet (UV) plus hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was
selected as the preferred alternative by the Region. Implementation of Interim Treatment approach is presented, along with design general concept, implementation timeline, fabrication/preparation, G3 preparation, site modifications, permitting, installation, and start-up. Presentation summary includes: unique delivery with Region acting as contractor for site and supplier
acting as contractor for a "turn-key" process;
five months from date of PO issuance to having finished containers on site
for final hook-up;
water running on June 8, 2009;
less intensive permitting required due to temporary nature of works;
coordination of supplier, fabricator, and site trades was critical;
required balance of long-term vs temporary decision-making for
several items -
well pumping, VFD,
well control, PLC and SCADA,
drain lines and service water,
reusability of equipment for long term use; and,
success was achieved by effective communication between all
stakeholders. Includes figures.
