This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of Long Beach Water Department's (LBWD's) Seawater Desalination
Program. Research project objectives include: determine the maximum sustainable
intake filtration and discharge rate; and,
evaluate seasonal water quality
impacts on the quantity and quality,
and determine if further treatment is
needed (i.e. microfiltration). LBWD's research approach included:
Pilot Testing (2008);
Demonstration Scale
(2008-2010); and, Production Plant (~2015). Research sites include a demonstration facility and a pilot testing facility. Initial data analysis of system
flows demonstrates that the lower
filtration rate of 0.05 gpm/ft2 and
the intermediate filtration rate of
0.1 gpm/ft2 show no significant
tidal influence on production. The secondary goal of water quality cartridge
filtration system of 100 mm
and 5 mm filters improves the
turbidity and SDI effluent to a
comparable level as the MF effluent.
Discharge from system is showing no
impacts from tide conditions or
plugging. Includes table, figures.
