This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of historical water quality issues at the City of Ann Arbor, Michigan. A project was initiated to: determine customer recommended hardness; assess water quality implications of softer water; assess health implications of softer water; and, refine costs for softer water. Utility survey results are provided for hardness goals and sodium. A citizen advisory committee was formed and health considerations of sodium are presented, along with 2007 data on Ann Arbor drinking water contribution to overall sodium concentrations, sodium impact on aquatic life, health professional feedback on calcium in water, potential benefits of the impact of reduced hardness, and phosphorus in dishwasher detergent. The findings of a residential Ann Arbor customer survey on the value of reduced hardness are presented, along with feedback from a large user focus group on the benefits of softening, and the impact on cost of water softening processes by large water users. Includes tables, figures.
