Sources of water treatment plant (WTP) residuals are presented, along with a minimization hierarchy that includes: discharge equalization; residuals minimization; residuals treatment; and, zero liquid discharge. Presentation summary includes the following: many alternatives are available to minimize
discharges of water treatment plant residuals;
minimization techniques may reduce residuals
volume, mass, or both;
specific alternatives may or may not be
feasible based on specific plant conditions; and,
moving down the minimization hierarchy can
lead to greater reduction in discharges, but
