This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of World Water Corps Research, which
aims to analyze actual fieldwork and
evaluate data collected from fieldwork. Mapping will be critical for establishing actual safe
drinking water/improved sanitation coverage in
developing countries and monitoring progress in
meeting Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). A mapping overview is presented, along with mapping methodology, the WWC volunteer survey, and mapping case study results are given for the following countries: Malawi, India, Nicaragua, and Honduras. Conclusions indicate the following: Case Studies 2 - 4 indicate significant
discrepancies between coverage data from
Mapping/Needs Assessments and Census data
issued by governments;
discrepancies mainly due to criteria for coverage
(ie. WFP/WWC looked at operational status of
facilities and government standards, where others did not);
discrepancies emphasize need for mapping to
depict accurate picture of safe drinking water/improved sanitation coverage for WFP
planning/monitoring and progress for MDGs; and, Case Study 4 - Malawi key findings with regard to
land use, lack of resources for repairs/maintenance,
and lack of decentralized systems could be helpful in
assessing/planning projects in other areas. Includes tables, figures.
