This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the drivers for desalination, and the development of seawater desalination in Australia, Israel, and the United States. Requirements and challenges of regulations and permitting are presented, along with intake structures. Strategies to address the institutional challenges are presented and include: better understanding of the regulatory and permitting
requirements; early and coordinated dialogue; investigation of the best technologies and strategies to
mitigate negative environmental impacts including appropriate location selection, subsurface intake structures, improved screening techniques, behavior barriers, and restoration approaches.
