This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of reactions between dissolved organic nitrogen (DON)
and oxidants (chlorine or monochloramine), a comparison of disinfection schemes, and DON quantification. Analytical methods for organic chloramines are listed, and the formation of organic chloramines - model compounds are presented, along with organic chloramines upon monochloramination of raw waters. Presentation summary for chlorination of the natural organic matter (NOM) isolates and raw waters includes:
rapidly formed organic chloramines within 10 minutes;
average organic chloramines production (10 minutes) -
0.78 (NOM) and 0.96 (raw waters) mg-Cl2/mg-DON; and,
decomposition of organic chloramines occurred over time -
decreased by 70% over 1 day.
Presentation summary for monochloramination of the NOM isolates and raw waters includes:
took much more time to form organic chloramines than
chlorination;
average organic chloramines production (24 hours)-
0.16 mg-Cl2/mg-DON; and,
organic chloramines formed upon monochloramination is
more stable. Includes figures.
