This poster paper presents a situation at Spanaway, Washington, where operators of a 1.5 mg steel standpipe suspected thermal stratification upon noticing condensation on the outside of the tank abruptly stopped about 20 feet up the side of the tank. A pronounced thermal stratification of more than 10 degrees C was discovered, with a distinct thermocline between 20 ft. and 40 ft. from the bottom of the tank. A submersible active mixer was installed to restore water quality and residual throughout the standpipe. The poster paper describes how the mixing system works.
