The presence of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in raw water affects more small water systems than almost any other contaminant. Iron and manganese fall under the secondary Safe Drinking Water Standards with maximum contaminant levels (MCL) of 0.3 mg/l Fe and 0.05 mg/l Mn. At higher concentrations, Fe and Mn will cause aesthetic problems such as staining, color, turbidity and taste. Iron and manganese may also accelerate biological growths in distribution systems. This paper offers a basic overview of iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide removal in general, then goes on to describe how Culligan International Company products can be used to remove them. Three case studies are offered.
