The work described in this paper is part of an ongoing three-year project sponsored by the USEPA Drinking Water Research Division in Cincinnati, Ohio to determine the capability and estimated cost for the rejection of disinfection byproduct precursors by membrane processes. There are basic divisions of the project for each source which are location; membrane selection; a fouling study and pilot plant operations in addition to report writing. Results to date have indicated that membranes remove 90% or more of disinfection byproducts formation potential (DBPFP); approximately 50% of the TOXFP is DBPFP and 50% is unidentified; consistent production is being achieved by the membrane pilot plant using the high FP water; and the major species of DBPs are chloroform, dichlorobromomethane, dichloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid and chloral hydrate.
