This paper will specifically address relationships between disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation and water quality parameters and, in particular, will provide some perspectives as to how these relate to current DBP regulatory activity. DBP formation and degradation are affected by numerous parameters (total organic carbon, temperature, pH, bromide). Individual DBPs do not all follow the same relationships with these water quality parameters. However, the combination of THMs and haloacetic acids appears to be a good surrogate for halogenated DBP (XDBP) formation and control in chlorinated waters. Exclusive relationships between chlorinated DBPs and bromide suggest that brominated analogues of these DBPs exist. In addition, notched box- and-whisker plots can be useful in understanding water quality parameters that affect DBP formation and degradation.
