The author discusses seven regulations that affect distribution systems. The regulations are: disinfection treatment technique requirement, total coliform MCL, disinfectant MCLs, disinfection byproducts, lead and copper, volatile organic chemicals, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The paper describes each of the regulations, the problems they address (for example, leaching from pipe materials), how the regulations affect distribution system design, operation, and maintenance, and some strategies for mitigating these concerns.
