Typically, capacities for an organic compound adsorbed on a fixed bed of granular activated carbon (GAC) fall well below the single- solute capacity determined in a batch contactor. Various correction factors are needed to account for the effects of temperature, multisolute competition, and preadsorbed natural organics on adsorption capacities. This paper evaluates GAC capacities determined for chloroform and three synthetic organics (SOCs) adsorbed on a post contactor operated at the Waterford Water Works for 225 days. Previous adsorption isotherm measurements indicated that single-solute GAC capacities for the target compounds range from low to high: chloroform (CHCl3), trichloroethylene (TCE), (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D) atrazine. The purpose of this paper is to discuss differences between the pilot column capacities and values expected from adsorption isotherm experiments in batch systems.
