This paper reports on a study undertaken by Austin, Texas, in 1991, to quantify the water savings from a Xeriscape program. The study had two purposes. The first was to determine a landscape score, or a point system that could be used to determine the elements of a water-saving Xeriscape plan. The second was to correlate water use habits with water savings. The first part of the study was successful; the authors developed a scoring system to measure the effectiveness of a particular landscape. This can be developed to say that if a residential landscape meets a certain score, it is a Xeriscape. Regarding the second part of the study, the researchers were unable to correlate water habits and water savings; the author identify a number of problems with the survey questionnaire that may have led to this difficulty. Several figures accompany the text, including the factorial design analysis, statistical analysis of results, and survey questionnaires.
