Florida relies on groundwater, but the supply is increasingly threatened. In 1983 the legislature passed the Water Quality Assurance Act. Among other things, the act provided money for a groundwater quality monitoring network. Using geographic information systems mapping, the state discovered the extent of its groundwater contamination problem and the vulnerability of its aquifers. The author summarizes the problem and makes a number of recommendations. The data are sufficient to illustrate the vulnerability of the state's groundwater resources, demonstrating a decided need to provide complete water treatment in many areas of the state. In addition the state must provide all due caution to protect its water resources. Though Florida has experienced a continuing legal battle to establish rules protecting aquifers, the development of a state wellhead protection program would ensure the quality of drinking water resources. The direction of waste water disposal methods should be evaluated to guarantee the continuing safety of drinking water resources.
