The inorganic turbidity of Lake Ontario water is caused by suspensions of illite (A), montmorillonite (B), calcite (C) and silt consisting of about 40% quartz and 60% feldspar (D). The coagulation process is often required to remove this turbidity. Both the effectiveness of this process and of subsequent filtration depend on some physical properties of the coagulation flocs which are formed. In this study, suspensions of minerals A, B, C and D were coagulated with alum to find out whether the nature of the turbidity affects the characteristics of flocs.
