Residual aluminum in drinking water poses a number of water quality and health related problems. The US Environmental Protection Agency established a secondary MCL of 0.05-0.2 mg/L for residual aluminum concentrations in January 1991. The objective of this research was to determine if temperature significantly affects residual aluminum concentrations at full scale treatment plants. Residual aluminum concentrations were measured in the effluent from the Van de Water treatment plant in Tonawanda, New York over the period of one year. Data from seven other treatment plants in the US and Canada also were compiled and analyzed. Laboratory tests were conducted to confirm and quantify field observations. Results showed that dissolved aluminum concentrations were temperature dependent and decreased with decreasing temperature, except for lime softening plants which showed no temperature dependence. Of the total residual aluminum, approximately 85% was in the dissolved form. Trends in dissolved aluminum were partially described by relationships based on coagulant solubility, although residual dissolved aluminum concentrations at the field scale were undersaturated with respect to Al(OH)3(s).
