New concerns about the risks posed by infectious organisms in public water supplies are forcing changes in the way utilities which use surface water maintain acceptable water quality. No matter what the source of a drinking water supply, watershed management will play an increasingly important role. This paper presents a perspective of the problem that infectious organisms pose to water system engineers. It illustrates the importance of watershed management in overall drinking water quality management. The authors proposed practical watershed management actions that can be taken by water utilities to reduce their vulnerability to infectious organism events. The art of managing raw water infectious organisms through watershed management practices is very old. However, the science of understanding what works to what degree and how reliably is new, especially with respect to today's organisms of most concern: giardia and cryptosporidium. This paper attempts to focus on the general concepts that must be associated with water quality management through practical watershed management. Many of the control measures, especially hydrologic controls, are found to be both feasible and practical.
