The driving forces for utilities evaluating and switching to a polyaluminum hydroxychlorides (PACl) coagulant or program were to take advantage of demonstrated in-plant operating performance superiorities over the conventional inorganic coagulant programs, not the least of which was the reduction in coagulant residue. The PACl type coagulants generally produce equal or superior settled and/or filtered water turbidity at much lower dosages of metal than a traditional aluminum or iron salt program. Raw water types of widely divergent quality have been treated with PACl. The reported benefits and the impact on solids production include some or all of the following: higher settled or clarified water pH; cold water performance; wider pH range of effective coagulation; longer filter run hours; finished water soluble coagulant; and overall cost savings. Utilities were surveyed specifically for the magnitude of solids reduction. Discussion of two representative individual facilities is presented.
