On January 17, 1994, a major earthquake struck the Northridge area. Nearly 200 water storage tanks were subjected to damaging levels of acceleration. The authors provided inspection and analysis of twelve of the Northridge tanks. Additional tank information was received from numerous sources. In all, thirty-three water tanks were included in the Northridge database. This survey includes most of the water storage tanks damaged during the earthquake. Tanks which survived undamaged were largely unreported since survey teams are looking for structural damage with the intent of getting the system up and running. The authors conducted a comprehensive survey of all of the tanks listed in the Simi Valley database. The survey includes photo and video records of each tank, field thickness measurements of the shell rings and dimensional measurements of the tank height and diameter. The water level in the tank at the time of the earthquake was also recorded from the utilities' records when available. In cases where the roof was damaged by sloshing, the tank was assumed filled to the top capacity level (TCL). If drawings were available for the tank, they were reviewed to verify field measurements. A damage survey sheet has been designed to aid the field investigator in gathering appropriate data and to assure that the structural engineer has sufficient data to make a meaningful comparison to the AWWA standard seismic design requirements.
