The growing demand on water resources has naturally led to intensified management of existing sources as well as exploitation of previously untapped ones. More stringent water quality regulations, partially a result of better analytical techniques, have placed even greater demands on the water works industry to provide safe, reliable drinking water. Some of the problems being encountered are contamination with Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's), Trihalomethanes (THM's), pesticides and Chlorine resistant microorganisms. Among the emerging technologies for dealing with these problems is the use of ozone for oxidation and disinfection. Also, aeration and induced air stripping have been proven to be viable means for contaminant removal, especially H2S and VOC's. MAZZEI(r) High Efficiency Injectors have proven to be very effective for the introduction of ozone and air into water streams. Among the challenges encountered during application of these technologies is removal of the entrained gasses inherent to the process. The Laval-Mazzei Degassing Separator is very effective for entrained gas removal. The combination of MAZZEI(r) Injectors and Laval-Mazzei Degassing Separators has been termed the GAS-DEGAS TREATMENT process, or GDT(tm). This paper describes a pilot study conducted to determine the benefits of the GDT(tm) process, such as: small footprint, minimal pressure drop in some applications, relatively low cost and the ability to contain and treat off gas. The results also show that GDT(tm) is also a very effective means for ozone application.
