The treatability study discussed in this paper consisted of both jar and pilot-scale tests on each surface water supply. One pilot plant train was used to evaluate the Cheney supply and a second pilot plant train was used for the Little Arkansas River. Each pilot train consisted of an aeration module, an influent module, a rapid mix/flocculation module, a sedimentation module, a recarbonation module, two filter modules, and a clearwell. Two filter media combinations were evaluated: a dual media consisting of 22-inches of anthracite over 12-inches of sand (simulating the existing Wichita WTP filter media); and a dual media consisting of 22-inches of granular activated carbon (GAC) over 12-inches of sand. Using both the jar and pilot plant equipment, tests were conducted to evaluate various coagulants and their effectiveness of enhanced coagulation for control of chlorination byproducts was evaluated and a comparison made of actual test results to those predicted by the USEPA's Water Treatment Plant Model, Version 1.5 for Windows 3.1tm. This paper presents the preliminary findings of this ongoing one-year investigation.
