This paper describes a simple but mechanistic model based on fundamental and measurable membranes, and feed water properties that were found to closely predict specific flux profiles during pilot-scale potable water microfiltration. This model, having one fitting parameter (backwash effectiveness), was also used to identify a critical recovery during constant flux, outside-in microfiltration. Identifying this threshold, critical recovery may be a valuable optimization procedure so as to reduce sludge disposal requirements while still maintaining a high value of the permeate flux.
