This paper presents a history of the DuPage County, Illinois, water supply with emphasis on taste and odor control issues. As part of its budget process, the DuPage Water Commission annually develops a Five Year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). One of the capital improvements proposed in the CIP was an additional reservoir at the DuPage Pumping Station, which would include taste-and-odor facilities. The treatment method chosen for taste-and-odor was oxidation using ozone or advanced oxidation processes (AOP) using ozone-hydrogen peroxide. It was decided to construct and operate an ozonation pilot plant during the taste-and-odor season of 1998 to determine if ozone or AOP could eliminate or greatly reduce the taste-and-odor in the treated water and then repeat the experiments during the taste-and-odor season of 1999. Based on the results of these two trial periods, a decision would be made regarding incorporating the taste-and-odor treatment in the design of the proposed reservoir.
