The objective of this study was to quantify water savings achieved by Xeriscaping. The study is based on the results of a survey sent out to over 6,000 single-family residences in the City of Austin in the summer of 1997 asking people about their landscapes, their households, and their watering habits. These surveys were matched with water consumption data culled from utility billing records. As a follow-up to a study conducted in Austin in the early 1990s, this study confirms the primary conclusion that Xeriscaping does save water. When landscapes have factors characteristic of Xeriscaping, they save an average of 214 gallons per day in the summer over traditional landscaping types, when other factors are accounted for. This report confirms these relationships through examining the correlations between the predictors of water consumption and the actual water consumption for each household. This report also examines the Irrigation Audit and Xeriscape It Programs, investigating the savings in summer consumption resulting from each.
