This paper describes how the need to meet future water demands and the desire to provide for a more reliable water supply for Las Vegas, Nevada, resulted in the planning, design, and construction of a new submerged water supply intake in Lake Mead. The paper provides a brief history of Las Vegas, its growth and development, and the activities that led to a decision to build a new intake with its associated water supply facilities. Intake design and construction details are presented along with descriptions of measures taken to deal with construction difficulties.
