A survey of the mechanized Linear Move Irrigation System showed that 40 California
growers use 100 linear move irrigation systems to grow a variety of row crops.
These machines apply water in a uniform and controlled manner. Economic benefits
include: increased germination; higher yield; reduced cultural costs; and, water
savings. The initial cost is reported as the biggest
disadvantage, followed by maintenance, operational cost, and the inability to "catch-up"
on irrigation once behind schedule. A detailed analysis of the survey, field data,
and research gap about this irrigation system is included. Includes 5 references, tables.
