System integration means coordinating or joining a number of computer applications and sites to function as a whole. This paper describes in some detail the process of system integration, beginning with the question "Where do we begin?" The author's advice is to evaluate current systems and problems and correct and critical processing issues first. A team comprising management and staff develops a high-level statement of company goals and direction for 3-5 years. Determine which goals should be accomplished by computerization, and to what extent they should be integrated with the existing system. Complete a more detailed implementation plan for the specific goals, using a phased approach for installation to ensure maximum control. Work on the actual implementation of systems integration goals, with the step-by-step success of phase completion. Two major keys to success are organization and flexibility.
