Siting storage tanks is based on engineering principles, aesthetics, and politics. Engineering design plans have typically been used to give decision-makers an idea of what the tank will look like. Understandably, many people have difficulty imagining the proposed structure from drawings. A better method of visual simulation is to create color renderings, which can be done relatively simply and inexpensively using computer programs. Video imaging uses a combination of computer-aided design and drafting, shading, rendering, and animation software to create visual images that resemble photographs. This paper explains how this is done.
