In this introductory overview to automatic meter reading (AMR), the author discusses several methods: basic read/bill cycle; handheld computers; remote metering, including generator remote, encoder remote, hybrid remote; automatic data capture, including radio frequency; automatic meter reading, including cable TV, telephone, radio frequency AMR, and hybrid AMR; and emerging technologies, including CeBUS, ISDN, and microwave. Primary features, impact on operations, and major vendors of each technology will be presented. An illustration of cost savings is given. The author offers general recommendations on selecting and obtaining automatic meter reading.
