City of Houston Water Production Division administrative personnel are spread out at four different sites in the Houston area. Operations personnel are located at several other locations in the Houston area. In 1992, 58 PCs were used for standalone applications. In order to connect these people together and to facilitate the exchange of information, additional PCs were purchased and computer networks were planned and implemented. A Local Area Network (LAN) connects the Personal Computers (PCs) at each site. In addition, the four main administrative sites are connected by a Wide Area Network (WAN). Twenty-three additional people can access the LAN/WAN by dial-in remote communications. The process of planning, purchasing, installing and operating these networks is described. Lessons learned and plans for future growth are discussed.
