This paper describes how a computerized work order system is used to conduct the following functions: service request logs, backlog reporting, utility coordination, work order issuance, work order completion, utility damage reports, crew and equipment usage, street repair orders, and customer follow up. In addition, the author discusses how information in the database can help in decision making, including performance evaluations, resource allocation, material control, cost accounting, operational budgeting, backlog control, customer relations, condition of the infrastructure of cause of problems, claims response, and emergency response. A few tips on establishing a work order system are offered.
