There are many aspects to the successful implementation of telemetry systems for water distribution. This article covers four specific topics that are important in providing a cost effective system: control strategies for quick response to fire flows; low cost, leased line communications; automatic well testing procedures; and standardized booster pump station controls. The examples used to illustrate these topics are based on a case study of the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for the Westpac Utilities Division of Sierra Pacific Power Company in Reno, Nevada.
