The Chicago Water System's existing distribution monitoring system has served the city well. However, the system is aging and repair of equipment has become increasingly difficult and expensive. In 1990, the city's new Pumping Station Control Center went online. This system currently provides for the continuous automatic monitoring and remote control of four of the city's seven electric motor driven pumping stations. The three remaining electric stations will be linked to the PSCC in the near future. For report purposes, data from the city's five steam turbine powered pumping stations is obtained manually at the PSCC by hourly telephone calls. The success and reliability of the PSCC led to the decision to expand this system to enable automatic monitoring of the five steam pumping station sand to automatically monitor pressure at locations in the city's water distribution system.
