Recent water industry discussions and conference presentations on conservation, micro-computer based equipment, water audits and meter downsizing programs have caused the industry to again become aware of the revenue implications of proper metering. Water industry standards, manuals of practice and even a recent court ruling (Tepper v. County of Lake Illinois) have pointed out to water utilities that a key element realizing revenue gains or avoiding revenue losses is the proper testing of their system water meters. This paper will focus on reviewing the applicable water meter testing methods now used in the industry with an emphasis on describing the types of equipment available, its uses and the equipment's expected results.
