The Village of Hazel Crest, Illinois is a community on the far south side of
Chicago. The Village is one of the many that received Lake Michigan water
originating in Chicago for distribution to its residents. The supervisory system
used to monitor and control the operation of the distribution system including
pumping station operation and reservoir levels, was antiquated and prone to
failures. This paper is based on a case study of the Village of Hazel Crest's
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The case study is used
as a back drop for discussing the do's and don'ts when developing a successful
SCADA system.
