This paper discusses mapping and managing the spatial information of the Prince William County Service Authority (PWCSA) municipal water and sewer system in Virginia that uses an integrated OpenGIS solution comprised of Autodesk MapGuide and Map software, WaterMAP and the Oracle E-Business Suite. A GUI front-end was developed to allow
users in AutoCAD Map and MapGuide to
write directly to the Oracle Spatial database.
Custom tools were developed in
AutoCAD Map to allow the PWCSA mapping
department to completely maintain
the water and sewer networks in the
AutoCAD environment. When a network
feature is added in AutoCAD Map, it is
immediately written to the Oracle
database. Therefore, data sharing is
real-time regardless of which application
is reading the Oracle data. Another advantage to using Oracle is that
the database is fully compatible with the
Hansen maintenance management system
the PWCSA uses to record and track
inspection results, work histories, job costing
information, etc. Topics covered include: growth as driver of new system; linking with Oracle; benefits of going digital; and, future goals and plans.
