Recent advances in artificial intelligence modeling techniques have allowed for
the development of models of complex non-linear processes. In the water treatment
industry, such models have fostered a greater understanding of otherwise poorly
understood unit processes. This paper briefly discusses the development of
artificial neural network (ANN) models for the removal of turbidity and color by
enhanced coagulation. More importantly, innovative applications of these models
in online and offline methods of indirect process control are discussed. When
used in enhanced coagulation process control, the models offer a method of
determining the appropriate operating conditions for the entire spectrum of raw
water conditions. Includes 13 references, tables, figures.
